Transience

die Vergänglichkeit

Experimental sound, performance, Text

HFBK Hamburg ICAT, 2026

On the train leaving this city,
in the state of not yet arrived,
time is frozen.
Some fractures tell me that
I should not act with words,
some fractures tell me that
I must not rely on intuition.
Failure often moves forward in my place,
the shell is still here,
before the sunset,
before the water turns murky,
before they call themselves innocent.
Time is frozen.
Objects are suspended beyond time.

What has not been realized is also what is absent.
This kind of beauty carries a touch of melancholy.
Time moves too fast, far too fast — beautiful dreams always pass too quickly.

These men with a feminine energy— whenever I ask them: “Why are you sad?” — they always answer: “I don’t know, I just feel sad.”

Sometimes I wonder what it was like when he missed me.

I like to watch your melancholic faces, to stay in these gray weathers, to like this sadness. This aesthetic is cruel.

I will sit anywhere to eat, listening to a violin playing on the street as I dip a carrot in sauce; I will sit by the lake eating bread dipped in hummus. I will walk with you through the park.

It is one person after another, the time I spend with each of them.

In the park I see countless black rabbits fleeing, and a fox slipping quickly into the trees.

When I sit on the train leaving the city, I remember that abandoned bridge, I remember the U-Bahn sound behind us, deep water underfoot, forest and the car lights ahead.

We’ll find a little circus-like wooden house on some meadow, burst in through the kitchen, and there’s a band playing inside. We cross the whole Tempelhof park. We stumble upon an open-air theatre and stand by to watch. We come upon a Turkish cemetery, a trumpet singing beautiful Turkish songs through its loudspeaker.

You pick me up with both hands and sprint across the street, or you hold me and spin me in the middle of the road.

At night the wind is bitter; I put on your oversized leather coat and get on the S-Bahn.

We sometimes walk into a cemetery; sunlight speaks of some kind of eternity, light birds and toppled headstones, industrious squirrels, and an old wallet worn on the ground.

Passing Neukölln’s broken billboards.

I come home and see the poster at my door smashed.

Three lights in the Berlin sky — we all saw them. The world is ending; please, not today, wait one more day, please — after the rave, not before. Thankfully you saw them too, otherwise I would have thought I was mad.

I ask, “Did anyone else see them? Why is there no one here?”

You pluck a flower from the curb and put it in my hair.

Take it home with you.

You see a tricycle by the roadside —

you can ride it home.

You put a necklace on my neck,

as if yesterday — or maybe last night — the blood moon spat out its beads.

Come with me to the forest.

Come with me to Italy.

Come with me to Morocco.

Let’s watch a film together.

This month I spent all my money; I scraped together €1.90 and bought the last bottle of booze for the month — it cost €2 — and the girl selling it said, “Take it, keep it.”

This month is my turning point: my mother died two days ago, I publicly parted ways with her, and I want to quit weed completely.

Sometimes I hear people speak of someone.

Recently I lost everything: my ID, bank card, passport, driver’s license.

I will dance and dance until dawn; from the second floor I look out — a pale blur. They start playing trip-hop inside; that music only suits the hour of dawn, not the glaring morning, not the full darkness.

I always think you’re carzy, or else I am crazy.

I put a chair covered in words at your door and then am questioned by the Russian neighbor, and finally I flee in panic.

The next day I hear you cursing me in French on the phone. We cut off contact.

On a cold early morning I take the wrong train and cry at the unfamiliar station. There is no one at the station. I take the wrong exit, cross a long, dark industrial passage, go up to a very high bridge — the wind is still, it’s quiet and deserted — beneath, on the other side, is the S-Bahn.

Sometimes a chill of some morning drags me back two or three Junes: those sleepless long nights, the daytime too clear.

Sleepless images loop without end,

films racing through metros, trains, taxis,

I see others in those films and I see myself.

This city sometimes astonishes me,

but more often it is severe; I call it loathing.

Yet now those bright things have become an infinite tenderness. This familiar sorrow will visit again much later.

So those astonishments return again and again.

What accumulates is invisible now.

I search for them here, then they vanish into the night.

Sometimes I remember that conversation on the train:

“What are we, after all?”

Summer is gone. I feel as if I might have fallen in love with you.

You would rather come with me to pick out a doorbell than go to the afternoon theatre rehearsal.

So you hurriedly take me everywhere, and I hurriedly go with you to see films.

I eat the oil-and-vinegar salad he once made for me and listen to your favorite band.

When I talk about him, I see your sad face.

I simply like watching every sad and beautiful face.

Misserfolg schreitet oft stellvertretend voran,

Schlaflose Bilder laufen endlos in Schleife,

So kehren jene Erstaunungen immer wieder zurück.
